One beautiful morning when Janie, Freddie and Grettie, the group of smurfs who were best friends, were walking through the forest back to their houses they noticed that there were no beautiful flowers, no fairies prancing around on the fresh green grass. Nothing.

Suddenly their racoon friend, Charlie, popped out of a bush and said with terror in his voice, "Groehen, the bad wizard, is paying us a v-v-visit," he stammered. "He wants our land, our homes... everything!"

Janie and her friends jumped into the racoon's bush and Grettie said, "We must fight even though it is against our code of non-violence. We must save our land." After some discussion everyone finally agreed. All of them, except Charlie, ran as fast as their minute legs could take them. They reached the door of the house of their good friend, Wannie the Witch.

Wannie They knocked on the door. "Hello," said a pleasant voice. "Come in. Quickly."

"Wannie?" asked Janie.

"Yes" replied Wannie, expectantly. Wannie was a little, shrivelled up witch with a large, lonesome wart on the tip of her nose. But she had a heart of gold.

"Could you make us some battle clothes, and a sword that.....that does something really bad so we can hurt Groehen," requested Janie, hoping and praying that Wannie would agree.

" Yes. Stay here, for now I must show you something. I have known for a while that Groehen was coming to do battle. I didn't tell you because you would have worried." Wannie pulled out a long, silver sword with a beaded handle out of what seemed to be a dazzling sheath. She said, "This sword has inside the blood of the bravest men who have ever fought against Groehen. It does amazing things. It can hurt badly but never would dream of killing. You shall use this because if you just hurt Groehen badly he would never think of coming back."

Grettie, Janie and Freddie grabbed the sword, gave their thanks, turned the door handle and ran as fast as their tiny legs could take them.

The next morning, the whole town of Luchkia was ready in battle clothes. They all gathered in a tree-house. They had been in there for hours and hours. When most of them were about to get up and go there came the sounds of horse hooves pounding on the ground. Groehen had arrived. Everyone stood up and said good luck to their friends and family, then climbed down the ladder.

They fought bravely. Freddie managed to slash Groehen's face and neck with the sword. He was very proud. Janie's, Freddie's and Grettie's people had won.

It was now time for celebration. The whole town had milkshakes and partied until their legs could no longer carry them.
