About the Unit

Building from Year 5, children further explore the elements of persuasion in texts, and the difference between the expression of a particular viewpoint and the presentation of a balanced discussion. Additionally, students will revisit the idea that texts are and can be adapted to suit different purposes and audiences, and they will further develop their use of clear language to present a spoken argument or point of view.

Children will develop their ability to quickly appraise a particular discussion text and evaluate whether it is presenting a biased or a balanced view.

They will also get opportunities to speak in a clear, interesting and persuasive way, when presenting a particular view and/or clearly and fairly represent different views when presenting a balanced discussion.

Children will identify what features and elements might be included in a persuasive argument and/or in a balanced discussion, and they will write an effective persuasive argument and/or balanced discussion, making appropriate language, style and structural choices to meet a particular purpose and audience.

It is also expected that this unit will be taught with some cross-curricular content. Possibilities include Humanities (The Mountainous Environment and tourism), Science (Interdependence & Adaptations), PSHE, and Mathematics (e.g. justifying calculations/methods).

Students are also expected to take a full part in the ICT, drama, art, vocabulary development and spekaing and listening opportunities which will be made available to them through the unit.
