Expectations

At the end of this unit it is hoped that MOST children will be able to:
appraise texts and evaluate whether it is presenting a biased or a balanced view; speak in a clear, relatively interesting and persuasive way when presenting a particular view; identify many features and elements of a persuasive argument and/or a balanced discussion; write an effective persuasive argument and/or balanced discussion, to meet a particular purpose and audience.

Some children will not achieve all the above expectations but will still be able to:
appraise, with support, some texts and evaluate whether it is presenting a biased or a balanced view; with support, demonstrate an improvement in their ability to speak in a clear, relatively interesting and persuasive way when presenting a particular view; identify some features and elements of a persuasive argument and/or a balanced discussion; with support, write a persuasive argument and/or balanced discussion, to meet a particular purpose and audience.

Other children will have progressed beyond the above expectations and will (at least!) be able to:
quickly and independently appraise a wide range of texts and evaluate whether it is presenting a biased or a balanced view, justifying their own evaluations; speak in a clear, interesting and persuasive way, when presenting a particular view and/or clearly and fairly represent different views when presenting a balanced discussion; identify a wide range of features and elements which might be included in a persuasive argument and/or in a balanced discussion; independently write an effective persuasive argument and/or balanced discussion, making appropriate language, style and structural choices to meet a particular purpose and audience.

It is very possible that some children will need extension beyond these general end-of-unit expectations.
