Expectations

At the end of this unit it is hoped that MOST children will be able to:
appraise a particular biography text and evaluate what information might or might not usefully be gleaned from it; speak clearly, providing some evidence and reasoned conclusions, as part of an oral presentation of a particular biography; identify many of the features and elements that might be included in an effective biography or autobiography; write an effective biography or (simulated) autobiography, making many appropriate language, style and structural choices to meet a particular purpose and audience.

Some children will not achieve all the above expectations but will still be able to:
appraise, with support, a particular biography text and identify some useful information; participate in an oral presentation of a particular biography; identify some of the features and elements that might be included in an effective biography or autobiography; with support, write a biography or (simulated) autobiography, making some appropriate language, style and structural choices to meet a particular purpose and audience.

Other children will have progressed beyond the above expectations and will (at least!) be able to:
quickly appraise a particular biography text and evaluate what information might or might not usefully be gleaned from it; speak in a clear and interesting way, providing evidence and reasoned conclusions, as part of an oral presentation of a particular biography; identify what features and elements might be included in an effective biography or autobiography; write an effective biography or (simulated) autobiography, making appropriate language, style and structural choices to meet a particular purpose and audience.

It is very possible that some children will need extension beyond these general end-of-unit expectations.
