Expectations

At the end of this unit it is hoped that MOST children will be able to:
have a sound understanding of how poets can use personification to create some effects for their readers; write a poem that uses personification; have a sound understanding of how poets can use powerful images to create some effects for their readers; value their own poems and those of others and enjoy sharing them.

Some children will not achieve all the above expectations but will still be able to:
have some understanding of how poets can use personification to create some effects for their readers; can write a poem that begins to use personification effectively; have some understanding how poets can use powerful images to create some effects for their readers; write a poem that begins to use powerful imagery; have some understanding of how poets can use surprising and amusing images to create some effects for their readers; write a poem that begins to use surprising and amusing imagery.

Other children will have progressed beyond the above expectations and will (at least!) be able to:
understand how poets can use personification to communicate with their readers; write a poem that begins to use personification effectively; understand how poets can use powerful images to communicate with their readers; write a poem that begins to use powerful imagery effectively; understand how poets can use surreal, surprising and amusing images to communicate with their readers; write a poem that begins to use surreal, surprising and amusing imagery effectively.

It is very possible that some children will need extension beyond these general end-of-unit expectations.
