Basically, a noun is a word which names an object, a place, a person, a thing.

There are some different TYPES OF NOUNS:

PROPER NOUNS:

Nouns which are real names are called Proper nouns.

Proper nouns usually refer to a specific, named person or thing.

Proper nouns usually begin with a CAPITAL LETTER!

As an example, "dog" is not a proper noun, it is a noun.

But in this sentence: "My dog, Spot, likes marshmallows", Spot is a proper noun because it is the specific name of a thing - a dog!

Words which are used instead of a NOUN are called Pronouns.

There are many types of pronouns but let's keep it simple. Words like: I, you, my, myself, mine, yours, yourself, theirs, them, his, her and so on are all pronouns.
