Bilbo wants all the problems to be solved between Thorin and the woodelves and Bard so he sneaks away one night and gives the Arkenstone to Bard. He tells Bard to use it in his bargaining with Thorin.Bilbo returns to the dwarves because he is still their loyal friend. Before Bilbo leaves the camp of the woodelves and men, Gandalf reappears and congratulates him on his actions.
