    [5] Riddles in the Dark

    Bilbo wakes up and can't see anything.

    He reaches out in the dark and finds something which he puts in his pocket.

    He goes forwards.

    He meets a nasty, slimy creature called Gollum by an underground lake.

    Gollum wants to eat him.

    Bilbo and Gollum make a deal: if Bilbo can answer some riddles, Gollum will show him the way out. If Bilbo fails...

    Bilbo and Gollum ask and answer lots of riddles until Bilbo asks, "What have I got in my pocket?"   [Try the riddles for yourself!]

    Gollum can't guess, but he still wants to eat Bilbo. Bilbo runs away. He feels in his pocket and realises the thing he found before is a ring. It slips onto his finger.

    He trips up but Gollum, who is chasing him, goes past him because the ring makes Bilbo invisible.

    Bilbo follows Gollum to an exit and Bilbo escapes past some goblin guards by using his ring.

  • Bilbo knew evil creatures were near because his sword would glow as a warning.
  • Gollum rowed about the lake in a little boat using his big feet as paddles.
  • Bilbo lost his brass buttons from his waistcoat as he squeezed through the back door to escape.
