... make a MOVING SPIDER. Find a spider or a picture of one,
then make a quick sketch. Use your sketch and turn your spider into a
spider that really moves!

Materials:
- Crayons or markers
- Masking Tape
- Scissors
- Straw (1)
- String or fishing line
- Tag board or construction paper
- Pencil
- Pipe cleaners (2)
|
|
- Stetch basic outline of a spider's body (cephalothorax and
abdomen)
- Cut it out.
- Use this shape as the stencil to trace out a second spider body.
- Cut it out. Now you have two spider body shapes, each exactly the
same size.
- Decorate to look like your spider.
|
|
- Cut out a piece of straw just a little bit shorter than the length
of your spider.
- Tape the straw lengthwise to the inside of one of your spider body
shapes. We will call this body shape the TOP.
- Get some thin nylon cord (fishing line is ideal). About 2 metres
in length is ample.
- Fold the nylon in half and then thread the fold through the straw.
Be sure to thread it through from the abdomen end or else your spider
will move backwards!
- Make a loop out of the folded end of your nylon.
- Attach a piece of cardboard or ribbon at the knot which makes this
loop. This will prevent the looped end accidentally threading back
through the straw.
- Tie the loose ends together.
- Attach a piece of cardboard or ribbon at the knot at this end
also. This will prevent the end accidentally threading back through
the straw.
|
|
- Cut out some cardboard legs.
- Tape these legs to the inside the the other body shape. We can
call this body shape the BOTTOM.
- Match up the insides of TOP and BOTTOM spider shapes together.
- Staple these two body shapes together.
- Hang the looped end from the ceiling or in a doorway
- You're ready to test it out!
- Pull the two lines apart
- Are there any problems with your design? Can they be
fixed?
