GENERIC  MAGAZINE  ASSIGNMENT  #11

 

Select any tasks from the list below.  These tasks will be your assignment.  You need to do enough tasks to add up to a total of 50 marks - no more and no less.

The value of each task is listed at the end of each task description in squared brackets eg. [ ]

 

 

1.   Give a summary of a story or article in one paragraph. [5 marks]

 

2.   Retell a story or article to the class (you may use props). [5 mks]

 

3.   Conduct an interview in front of the class with one person

        acting as the interviewee and the other person the interviewer.

        This interview role play should be based on a story or article

        from your magazine.  This is a PAIR ACTIVITY and you will be

        marked as a pair with both people receiving the same score.

        Make sure you rehearse your interview and have good quality

        questions.   [10 mks]

 

4.   Read a poem/rhyme/chant from your magazine to the class.

       You should think about an interesting way to present your

       choice and make sure you've rehearsed it properly.  You

       may do this as a pair activity.  [5 mks]

 

5.   Select an article.  Now, write down some facts from the article

       and some opinions from the article.  [5 mks]

 

6.   Write a description about someone (maybe even yourself) who

       has been in the same situation or experienced something

       similar to a story or article in your magazine.   [5 mks]

 

7.   Find someone you are MOST like from your magazine.  Say

       why you are like them and also identify ways you are

       different from them.   [5 marks]

 

8.   Find someone in the magazine you think does something

       interesting.  Say why you think what they do is interesting.

       [5 marks]

 

9.   Write a trivia quiz of between 10 and 20 questions for the

       other people who are reading the same magazine as you.

       Your group will give you your mark based on the number

       of questions you asked and how fair your questions

       were (ie. make sure they're not too hard and not too easy!).

       [5 marks]

 

10.  Design a brochure explaining or advertising the topic

        featured in an article.  [5 marks]

 

11.  Make a diorama based on an article or story.  [10 marks]

 

12.  Interview someone you know who has been in a similar

         situation or who knows something about the topic of the

         article.  Decide upon up to 12 questions to ask and be sure

         to get your questions checked by your teacher first.  [10 mks]

 

13.  Draw a thinking map to show some information from an

        article.  [5 marks]

 

14.  Make a model (you can use Dacta, junk, Lego, dough, or

        whatever else) of an item described in the article.  [5 marks]

 

15.  Follow the instructions and make something (or a few things)

        which is described in your magazine.  [show your teacher

        what you want to do and the marks will be decided on then.]

 

16.  List arguments for and against a question raised in an article.

       Say what YOU think about those arguments, including which

       side of the argument YOU agree with - and give your own

       reasons for your opinion.   [10 mks]

 

17.  Conduct a survey (ask other students, teachers, other adults)

        to discover opinions about a theme in an article.  Graph the

        results and report back to the class, telling everyone what

        you found out.  [15 marks]

 

18.  Create a collage about a theme from an article by cutting out

        appropriate pictures from other sources and gluing them on

        a sheet of paper, ready for display on the wall.  Include the

        theme's title on your collage and be prepared to talk about

        it to the class.  [5 marks]

 

19.  Make a mobile based on a theme from an article.  Be prepared

        to describe it to the class.  [10 marks]

 

20.  Write a letter for the "Letters" section of the magazine on the

        computer.  Spellcheck it.  Make sure it is perfect (get a friend

        to check it.  Print it and hand to your teacher.  Each time you

        have to fix it up, you will lose a mark.  Once it is perfect, we

        will email it to the magazine!  [5 marks]

 

21.  Draw a picture about one of the stories or articles in the

        magazine and we'll send it.  [5 marks]

 

22.  Design a poster on an A4 sheet of paper encouraging people

        to read the magazine.  [5 marks]

 

23.  Write a poem of your own based on a poem from the magazine.

        Publish it in your publishing book.

        Present it to the class in an imaginative way.  [10 marks]

 

24.  Read the book reviews and write down the titles in the order

        of the book you most like the sound of, down to the book you

        like the least.  Give some good reasons for your top choice.

        [5 marks]

 

25.  Write your own captions to any 5 photos in your magazine.

        [5 marks]

 

26.   Transform the information from an article into another form,

          eg. diary, poem, short story, instructions, recipe, etc.

          Publish your work in your publishing book.  Be prepared to

           share it with the class.  [10 marks]

 

27.  Design a board game based on an article.  [10 marks]

 

28.  Create 2 question/answer sheets for the Flip-gate activity based

        on an article.  Name your sheets.  [5 marks]

 

29.  Create a set of 5 Pic-a-Hole cards based on an article.  Name your

        cards.  [5 marks]

 

30.  Write your own set of instructions for making something similar to

         the "Make and Do" section of the magazine.  [5 marks]

 

31.   Design a GOOD index for your magazine.  [20 marks]

 

32.   Make two puzzles similar to one of the puzzles described in your

         magazine.  You will have to explain your puzzles to the class.

         [5 marks]

 

33.  Pretend you are one of the people in an article.  In front of the

        class, tell us what you do and what you did to find, hunt, create

        or discover whatever it is you will be showing us.  Of course,

        you may use props - and your presentation must be based on

        an article and must be rehearsed.  [10 marks]

 

34.  Use an atlas and a blank map of the world to plot 10 places

        mentioned in your magazine.  Glue your map in your book.  [5 mks]

 

35.  Compare your life/situation with children in an article.  Say what

        is the same about your lives and what is different and give your

        opinions about the quality of their life compared to yours.  [10 mks]

 

36.  List the materials/items you would need to make something

         mentioned in the magazine.  [5 marks]

 

37.  Find 5 words you don't know the meaning of.  Use a dictionary to

        help you understand what they mean, then use them in a sentence

        of your own.  Underline each of your chosen words.  [5 marks]

 

38.  Draw a comic strip based on a story.  [10 marks]

 

39.  Research, prepare and give a one minute speech in front of the class 

        about a topic mentioned in an article.  [5 marks]

 

40.  Research, prepare and give a two minute speech in front of the class 

        about a topic mentioned in an article.  [10 marks]
